MISS FIX IT

It was cold and windy on Saturday March 19th, but that soon passed as 42 Girl Scouts arrived with warm enthusiasm for the day’s event. As expected NAWIC members were on hand to assist and local businesses were happy to donate and participate.

Our young ladies participated in 6 hands-on construction related stations that had them building, planting, installing, painting and learning the tools and trades of Women in Construction. In addition to their “Ms. Fix-It” badge they experienced proper fire extinguisher usage, landscaping techniques and drip irrigation knowledge, complete doorknob installation, PVC pipe construction (that doubled as handy little marshmallow shooters); additionally they were taught how to properly use hammer and nails which helped them complete their very own tool boxes to take with them along with their newly acquired painting skills.

One young lady showed me her secret stash of Marshmallow ammunition in her coat pocket which was destined for her older brother; another was going home to paint her house. Every station was a favorite for one young lady or another.

The event was a true success in so many NAWIC ways!

Thank you for your participation Cal Pac Painting of Nevada, Inc., LF Harris and Company, Martin~Harris Construction, Par 3 Landscape, Safety Training 24/7, Statewide Fire Protection and Southwest Carpenters Training Fund for your support.

BLOCK KIDS

For the Joy of Building a Project and McDonald’s

Dallas Reed, a fourth grader at Martha P. King Elementary in Boulder City, was thrilled to win the Block Kids competition at the Donald W. Reynolds’ Boys and Girls Club on February 12, 2011 and take home a trophy and “really cool erector set.” Dallas would have been glad to participate for the just the “joy of building a project and the McDonald’s” lunch served to participants. Dallas’ enthusiasm and creativity garnered him first prize for his Path of Freedom from Boot Camp to Afghanistan.  Dallas is very proud of his brother who is training in Texas.  Dallas’ project includes two forts topped by flags and a gold eagle.  A large bridge connects the forts and carries his brother with a large red, white and blue flag. NAWIC LV congratulates Dallas and all 70 participants from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Las Vegas, Henderson, and Boulder City for their exuberant participation and thanks the event sponsors and volunteers.

NAWIC held a Mini Block Kids event at the Innovations International Charter School on Friday, April15, 2011.  Three classes of second graders (about 70 students) participated in the event in their school gym.  Students took 30 minutes to build their projects and then decorated plastic hard hats while the projects were judged.  Each class was awarded 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize as a group.  Some students worked on their projects in pairs or small groups.  The creative detail crafted into the projects astounded the NAWIC volunteers.  One student built a recycling center energized with solar power; other students focused on parks, high rises, schools, and homes with swimming pools.

NAWIC NEF CAD DRAFTING SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

By Cheri Hickman, CAD 2011 Chairman

The CAD Drafting contest is an event that NAWIC NEF sponsors to encourage CAD students to participate in to give them a challenging project to work on during their school year. They are paid in cash from our local chapter and if they go onto to Regional and National they win more cash.

First place, at Chapter, wins $500, 2nd Place: $300, 3rd Place:$200.

This year the event was held on Saturday, March 19 at the AGC office training facility.

We had 50 plans to judge this year. Each plan gets reviewed twice and then the 5 with the highest scoring are reviewed to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

Richard Knoeppel from Advanced Technical Academy is a huge supporter of the CAD contest. He works with his students as soon as they arrive in his class. His students always end up winning either first or second place in the contest.

This year's Area winner is Justin McClain. Justin was diligent with his plans, as were many of the other students. Some of the judging stated his strong points as being: a very good and creative narrative; paid attention to the owner's requirements as well as adding his own design ideas; very well thought out and detailed; creative elevations and section.

Second place winner is Adrian Plata and third place is Ellen Ho.

Several students were very close in the running. Richard Knoeppel, their teacher, is coming up with new ways of encouraging students to participate in the program. He told me that some of the students will work together as a team and review each other's plans, giving them suggestions and looking for errors.

The judges have been participating, not only on the day of judging, but have also offered to help mentor the students with their work. The students truly appreciate the support. It gives them the incentive to work even harder on the project when they know they have outside support. There were 13 volunteer judges this year and I had four amazing ladies assisting me during the judging.

First place winner, Justin McClain took first place at Regional and Nationals! Congratulations Justine.
