MISS FIX IT
During the week of March 1-7, 2009, the National Association of Women in Construction celebrated its 12th annual Women in Construction (WIC) Week. The purpose of WIC Week is to raise awareness of the possibilities the construction industry holds. In celebration of WIC week, chapters host various events aimed at enhancing the success of women in the construction industry. Some examples of WIC week programs include Block Kids, Ms. Fix It workshops, and Construction Career Days.
Many of today’s women professionals have memories of being an active member of a Girl Scout troop in their local community as a young girl. As Girl Scouts, young girls are given the opportunity to obtain a variety of skills and knowledge through troop activities, volunteering, camping, and earning badges and awards.
On Saturday March 7, 2009, the National Association of Women in Construction Las Vegas Chapter 74 (NAWIC) collaborated with the Girl Scouts of Frontier Council. NAWIC and the Girl Scouts of Frontier Council hosted workshops to educate the girls on careers in construction, along with assisting them to earn their “Ms. Fix It “badge.
The workshops included:
- Painting Pros hosted by Cal /Pac Painting of Nevada, Inc.
- Doorlock Warlock hosted by LF Harris and Company, Inc.
- Brick Chick hosted by Par 3 Landscape and Maintenance, Inc.
- Safety Scouts hosted by McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.
- Pictured Squared hosted by M-Truss & Components.
